Our super shapes

We had great fun today, and learnt a lot too, using art straws and play dough to make 2D and 3D shapes. We had to work out how many sides or edges our shapes needed and whether they needed to be all the same length or not, then we needed enough little balls of play dough for the corners or vertices. Have a look at the results – what do you think? You could ask us a question about shapes and see what we know!

We had a brilliant time on our trip to Thorp Perrow last week, a little early for the wonderful autumn colours though, so I would recommend that you make a visit there in a week or two to see the true autumn spectacular.  Loads of fun to be had too.

Our Science Investigation!

Hello and welcome to Woodpeckers’ first post of the new school year. It is great to see the children all settled and grown up in KS1! Last week we started our science topic of Climate Change. We learnt about the ‘Greenhouse Effect’ and did an experiment to test it. Our first challenge was to work together to build a house of bricks or lego in a tray. Then we put an ice cube in the tray. Some of us covered the tray with cling film to mimic greenhouse gasses, some of us left ours open. We all put our trays outside in the sunshine. We discovered that the ice cubes in the trays covered in cling film melted quite a while before the uncovered ones. We know this is because the cling film, like the layer of greenhouse gasses, lets the sun’s rays through, but doesn’t let the heat out. We had a great time with our learning! What do you think?

Trip to Tees Valley

What a great day we had on Monday. The sun shone as we spent the day making smelly potions (some much nicer smelling than others!) and learning about what plants need to grow; as well as identifying different varieties of flowers and trees. Thank you very much to the parents who came with us to help make sure the children had a fantastic day. Please let us know what you think of our pictures.

Pritchard was first, Jenkins followed on, but it was a few hours before Wiltshire, Campbell and Nuttall joined the party! Now they are all here, dried out and gorgeous! We have had so many visitors, but we are still eggstremely eggsited!

Awe and Wonder

What an amazing thing to watch! Our first chick hatched out before our very eyes today. The children were absolutely enthralled.  I hope at least one of the others waits until we are in school tomorrow to make it’s appearance! Truly was awe and wonder. Welcome Pritchard!

To mark the end of our African topic, we had a visit from some strange and a bit scary visitors.  Have a look at our pictures and see how brave we were. How many of the animals can you name?

We are scientists.

Another one of our science activities last week was doing some investigation – which material was the strongest? We dropped a weight on different materials to see which one would break. First we put on our white coats and our goggles because we had to be safe (and that is what real scientists wear!) We also stood on a bench to make sure that the weight did not drop on our toes! We found out that the polystyrene was the weakest as the weight made a huge hole in it and that the wood was the strongest because the weight just bounced off it.
